Suit: Detroit Officers Beat Man in MGM Grand Lobby

A Detroit man has filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Police Department after he was beaten in the lobby of the MGM Grand Casino in January. The plaintiff claims in his suit that he and his fiance were waiting for a cab in the lobby when two officers approached them and told them to wait outside in the cold. When he protested, the lawsuit states the officers put him in a choke hold and beat him with their batons. The plaintiff said the injuries he suffered have prevented him from working.  David Ashenfelter, Detroit Free Press  09/29/2011

California Fatal Police Shooting Prompts Lawsuit

spacer image

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed in Escondido, Calif., against the local police department by the family of a 51-year-old man who was fatally shot in March. Police were called to the man's home after he locked himself in the bathroom and threatened to cut his own throat with a pair of scissors. The suit claimed the officer that fired the single fatal shot "had no reason to shoot because [the man] did not pose a threat to anyone." Officers should have attempted to calm the man instead of shooting him, the plaintiffs say in their suit.  J. Harry Jones, San Diego Union Tribune  09/28/2011
