Wrongful Death

Jury Finds Iowa State Partially Responsible for Student's Suicide

A jury found Iowa State University partially at fault for the suicide death of a student in November 2015. The lawsuit was filed by the 21-year-old's parents, who allege underfunding, lack of staff, and inexperience at the university's mental health services contributed to the student's death. According to the plaintiffs, their son was treated by an unlicensed graduate assistant when he was suffering from depression and anxiety. After he informed the woman that he was having suicidal thoughts, the school failed to take action, the lawsuit alleged. The jury found Iowa State 50 percent responsible for the death, resulting in a $315,000 award to the family.
