The Municipality of Anchorage will pay more than $5.5 million to 11 women who claimed they were sexually assaulted by a police officer now serving 87 years in prison for rape, Mayor Dan Sullivan’s office announced Tuesday. The settlement ends the lawsuits against the city, but some of the victims plan to continue separate civil actions against former office Anthony Rollins. The individual settlements range in size from $1.7 million for one woman down to $75,000.  Associated Press, The Washington Post  09/05/2012

A Kansas woman who believes she was infected with hepatitis C by a former medical technician now accused of stealing narcotics filed a lawsuit Tuesday against a Pittsburgh hospital where he once worked. Appeals Court Rejects Suit Against Haltom City

spacer image

Two families who sued Haltom City and the Skyline Mobile Home Estates after a devastating flood in 2007 that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old girl and severe burns to a mother and son got a painful legal setback when the 2nd Court of Appeals ruled that the city was not negligent. The appeals court said that the families did not present enough evidence to show that Haltom City created a dangerous situation before the night of June 17 and the early morning hours of June 18, when Whites Branch Creek left its banks and the mobile home park flooded. In its opinion, the justices said that under the Texas Tort Claims Act there is a narrow window in which governmental immunity is waived.  Elizabeth Campbell, Star Telegram  09/05/2012

In a Friday ruling the Golden Nugget was ordered by a New Jersey judge to ante up nearly $1 million to pay gamblers for the chips they won after realizing that cards were being dealt from unshuffled decks in a series of mini-baccarat games on April 30. Ruling on a motion in a civil case involving various claims by both sides related to the disputed payout, Superior Court Judge James Isman also told the Golden Nugget that it couldn't reclaim another $500,000 it paid some winners after the games, according to the Associated Press.  Martha Neil, American Bar Association Journal  09/05/2012
