Over 600 Pedestrians Died in Texas Last Year
Texas is ranked as the eighth most dangerous state for pedestrians, according to the 'Pedestrian Danger Index' compiled by nonpartisan advocacy groups Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition. Texas had 485 pedestrian fatalities in 2013, and in 2017 recorded 616 and in 2018, 619, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.

Colorado Man Alleges Juul Devices Caused Nicotine Addiction

A 19-year-old man from Colorado has filed a lawsuit against Juul alleging the company's vaping products caused him to become addicted to nicotine. The plaintiff says he has been using Juul vaping devices for the past three years. As alleged in the complaint, the plaintiff experienced 'pain, suffering and emotional distress' as a result of the nicotine addiction. The lawsuit seeks more than $75,000 in compensation from Juul Labs, based in California.

Michigan Apples Recalled for Potential Listeria Contamination

North Bay Produce has issued a recall on apples due to a possible listeria contamination. According to a recent news release, nearly 2,300 cases of fresh Michigan apples and two bulk bins that were distributed in eight states are included in the recall. Varieties included in the recall are McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Jonathan, Fuji, Jonamac and Red Delicious apples. The apples were distributed throughout Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin. The apples were sold in plastic bags under these brands: Great Lakes, North Bay Produce Pure Michigan as well as unbranded in clear plastic tote bags, white paper tote bags, and individually from retailers' display trays.

Study: Vehicle Automatic Braking Systems Have Room for Improvement

A new study released Tuesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ranks a majority of midsize cars as "superior" or "advanced" in their pedestrian crash prevention. But three models ranked as "basic," and three got "no credit" at all for their systems. "What it tells us and what it tells the automakers is there's obviously still room for improvement in these vehicles," said David Harkey, president of IIHS.

Mylan Pharmaceuticals is voluntarily recalling one lot of the anti-anxiety prescription drug Alprazolam (Alprazolam is a generic form of Xanax) nationwide because of 'the potential presence of a foreign substance,' according to a recall notice posted on the FDA website.

Jury to Decide if Mail Order Pharmacy Responsible for Woman's Death

A federal jury will decide if a mail-order pharmacy is to blame for the death of an Arkansas woman who was sent the wrong medication. The woman's son filed suit against Exactus Pharmacy Solutions, WellDyne Inc., and its subsidiary WellDyneRx over her death. According to the lawsuit, the elderly woman took the wrong medication, causing her to experience hallucinations that led to a fall, a broken leg and further events that caused her death.
