Med Center Whistleblower Is Fired, Files Lawsuit

A Pennsylvania woman has filed a lawsuit alleging she was fired from a medical center for reporting patient care issues. She claims that hospital officials violated the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act and other laws. The plaintiff says she was fired from her position at the med center after she reported "grossly negligent" care that included the death of one ICU patient. The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, in addition to attorney fees.

Suit Disputes Oregon's Claim in Malpractice Award

A former Eugene woman is trying to keep the state of Oregon from claiming more than $200,000 from a medical malpractice settlement she received after suffering a stroke at age 27 that left her with only limited use of her arms and legs. Attorneys for Danielle Elliott filed suit in U.S. District Court in Eugene to block a lien sought against Elliott by the Oregon Department of Human Services. The agency wants to be reimbursed for money it spent covering Elliott’s medical costs under the federal Medicaid program, the Eugene Register-Guard reported.

Bedbug Infestations at Apartment Complex Sparks Lawsuit

21 tenants of a Concord, California apartment complex have filed a lawsuit against the apartment owners over recurring bedbug infestations. According to the lawsuit, the apartment complex is "infested with bedbugs, roaches and rodents, and that the heating system, wiring and plumbing are defective." Tenants say that the owners and the Concord code enforcement unit have turned a deaf ear to their years of complaints. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages, a remedy to the bedbug problem and repairs.

Bank of America Found Liable for Countrywide Fraud

 

A federal jury in Manhattan on Wednesday found Bank of America liable for fraud because of thousands of defective mortgages sold by its Countrywide Financial unit, handing the government a victory in one of the few major trials rooted in the financial crisis. The jury found Bank of America and former Countrywide executive Rebecca Mairone were liable for one count of civil fraud.

Lawsuit Says Zoo Was Aware of Dangerous Exhibit

An attorney representing the family of a boy who was mauled to death by dogs at the Pittsburgh Zoo says that officials were aware of the potential dangers of their African painted dog exhibit. In the documents filed this week, the attorney says that the exhibit's risks were brought up at least four times in meetings. The parents of the boy who fell into the dog exhibit filed a lawsuit against the zoo in May alleging wrongful death and negligence.

Reports: Hospital Employee Stepped Over Body of Missing Patient

The family of a woman who vanished from her San Francisco hospital room and was found dead 17 days later in an emergency stairwell is angered by reports that a hospital employee stepped over her several days before the body attracted the attention of investigators, family representatives said.
