Supreme Court Errors Aren't Hard to Find |
The decisions of the Supreme Court are rich with argument, history, some flashes of fine writing, and, of course, legal judgments of great import for all Americans. They are also supposed to be entirely accurate. But a ProPublica review of several dozen cases from recent years uncovered a number of false or wholly unsupported factual claims.

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill May Be Largest Since 2010 BP Disaster |
An oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last week may be the largest in the U.S. since the 2010 blowout at BP Plc's Macondo well that sank the Deepwater Horizon rig. The Delta House floating production facility about 40 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana, released 7,950 to 9,350 barrels of oil from early Wednesday to Thursday morning, according to closely held operator LLOG Exploration Co. That would make it the largest spill in more than seven years, data from the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement show.

NTSB Blames Lockhart Hot Air Balloon Crash on Lax Regulations, Pilot's Decisions |
The National Transportation Safety Board is unveiling findings from its investigation into last year's deadly hot air balloon crash outside of Lockhart, hammering the Federal Aviation Agency for its lax regulation of the industry. The pilot had enough Benadryl in his system to impair him to the level of a drunk driver, according to investigators on Tuesday. The NTSB has long pushed for the FAA to increase standards for hot air balloon pilots, but the agency has declined. The FAA does not conduct drug tests for balloon pilots, a point NTSB members have focused on during previous hearings.

Charlottesville Files Suit Seeking to Block Further Hate Demonstrations |
The city of Charlottesville, Virginia has filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent further hateful demonstrations, like the deadly white supremacist rally this summer. The city filed suit on Thursday alleging the white supremacists who descended on the city in August were acting as an illegal militia. If the lawsuit is successful, the city would be able to block or strictly limit similar demonstrations. "It was not a normal protest, what we saw was really militaries invading Charlottesville," said the former head of the Justice Department's National Security Division, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the city.
