Former Illinois Priest Accused of Sexual Abuse |
| An Illinois man has filed a lawsuit against a former Catholic priest and the diocese of Belleville, Ill., over alleged sexual abuse he suffered as a boy. According to the suit, the plaintiff claims he was "sexually molested when he was a young altar boy" by the priest. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages. Suit: School Employees Assaulted Autistic Boy |
| The father of an autistic child in Virginia has filed a $20 million lawsuit against the Bedford County school district and two former employees who allegedly abused the child on a school bus in 2009. Surveillance video shows the bus driver and a special education aide hitting the boy with a fly swatter as well as kicking, choking and beating him. Motorola Hit with Another Patent Infrigement Lawsuit |
| Technology company Intellectual Ventures has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Motorola Mobility, claiming the company "derives substantial revenue from the sale of infringing products." The suit contents Motorola is using patented handset technology without a licensing agreement with Intellectual Ventures. Asbestos Case on Hold Until it Goes to New Judge |
| The Mississippi Supreme Court says a judge should have stepped aside in an asbestos case after Union Carbide Corporation raised questions about his impartiality. The court removed Circuit Judge Eddie H. Bowen of Smith County. All proceedings in the case were halted until a new judge is appointed. Jury: Drug Firms Liable in Vegas Hepatitis C Case |
| A Nevada jury found drug companies liable and awarded a total of $20.1 million Thursday to five plaintiffs who had accused drug companies of negligently distributing large vials of an anesthetic to Las Vegas clinics at the center of a 2008 hepatitis C outbreak. The jury found Teva Parenteral Medicines Inc., Baxter Healthcare Corp. and McKesson Corp. liable for injuries to five endoscopy clinic patients. In addition the jury found the firms liable for punitive damages in an amount to be determined following further deliberations. Sixel: Fewer Texans Died on the Job Last Year |
| The number of Texans who died in work-related injuries last year fell to its lowest level since 2004, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. "It doesn't surprise me that it's down," said Stan Marek, CEO of the Marek Family of Companies, a Houston based commercial construction firm. Marek estimates that the amount of commercial construction is down 50 to 60 percent from just a couple of years ago. Residential building may be down even more, he said. L.M.
