Former Penn State Asst. McQueary Files Lawsuit

spacer image

Former Penn State football assistant Mike McQueary has filed a lawsuit against the university, claiming he is being treated like a scapegoat in the Jerry Sandusky case and not a whistleblower. The suit, which seeks $4 million in damages, states that he has been "labeled and branded" as part of the cover-up efforts of the Penn State administration; in 2001, McQueary told then-head coach Joe Paterno that he saw Sandusky molesting a child in the locker room shower. Since the story broke, McQueary says he has suffered "distress, anxiety, humiliation and embarrassment because of what the lawsuit says is defamation and misrepresentation by the school."   Cindy Boren , The Washington Post   10/03/2012

Suit: Gay Conversion Therapy Law Unconstitutional

A conservative group in California has filed a lawsuit against a new state law prohibiting "conversion therapy" for minors in attempts to change sexual preference from gay to straight. Governor Jerry Brown said the "non-scientific therapies" have driven kids to depression and suicide; plaintiffs, however, say the law violates free speech rights to therapists and patients and parents. President of the Pacific Justice Institute Brad Dacus called the bill "outrageously unconstitutional."   Patrick McGreevy, LA Times   10/02/2012

An Atlanta mother has filed a lawsuit against RadioShack over the purchase of two refurbished cell phones that had "graphic" pornographic images on them. The suit claims the mother thought she was buying new phones, but RadioShack gave her refurbished ones without her knowledge. The woman says her 13-year-old daughter "went through counseling after being exposed to the graphic images."   Alexis Stevens, Atlanta Journal-Constitution   10/03/2012

San Antonio-based Texas MedClinic, which operates a chain of urgent care clinics, announced Tuesday it's severing ties with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas following a dispute over reimbursement rates. The decision means that at least in Bexar County, 273,000 residents won't be able to use their Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance at any of Texas MedClinic's 14 locations starting Oct. 18.   Patrick Danner, San Antonio Express News   10/03/2012

Another Gender Discrimination Suit Against Walmart

Three female employees of a Tennessee Walmart have filed a lawsuit against the retailer, saying they were "denied promotions" due to their gender. The lawsuit claims the plaintiffs are earning "thousands of dollars" less than their male counterparts and were told they could not be promoted because management is a "man's job." In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed a class-action sexual discrimination suit against the retailer brought by 1.5 million female employees across the country.   Victoria Cavaliere , New York Daily News   10/02/2012

Sorority Pledge Death Prompts Lawsuit

spacer image

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Delta Sigma Theta sorority over the death of an East Carolina University student. The girl died in a single-car wreck in 2010 at the end of a sorority "Hell Week." The suit claims the sorority deprived pledges of sleep during that week, which contributed to the accident. The girl was riding in a car with another pledge, who fell asleep at the wheel, slamming the car into a tree.   Anne Blythe, News & Observer   10/02/2012
