Supreme Court Case has Broad Implications for Businesses and Consumers

DuPont Reaches Settlement with Family of One Worker Killed at La Porte Plant
DuPont has settled one of the lawsuits brought by the families of four workers killed in a fatal gas leak at DuPont's La Porte plant, a lawyer announced Wednesday. The estate of Crystle Wise, represented by her daughter Jasmine, has reached a confidential financial settlement, according statements issued by DuPont and the Wise family attorney. Wise, an operator at the Lannate Unit, was killed last November when nearly 24,000 pounds of toxic methyl mercaptan spewed into a tower housing a pesticide manufacturing unit at the plant just outside Houston.

Attorneys for a military child who suffered brain damage at birth in Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson, Colorado, filed a petition Tuesday for the U.S. Supreme Court to consider the case. At issue is a 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that disallowed the case under the Feres doctrine, the exception to the Federal Tort Claims Act that bars active-duty troops from suing the government.
