One Manâ??s $100,000 Journey Through Arbitration
spacer image
The financial services industry bills arbitration as a â??prompt and inexpensive means of resolving issues.â?? Yet for consumers who go through the process, it can end up far more expensive and time-consuming than one would expect from that description. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, a self-regulatory agency, said arbitration cases this year through September have had a turnaround time of 15 months. A majority of cases donâ??t complete the arbitration proceedings. FINRA noted that about six out of 10 cases are settled, while another 9 percent are withdrawn.

Former House Speaker Hastert Faces Lawsuit by Sex Abuse Victim
spacer image
A judge has dismissed former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert's request to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a sexual abuse victim. The lawsuit was filed in April by a man who was allegedly touched inappropriately by Hastert back in the 1970's, when Hastert was a coach on the plaintiff's wrestling team. The plaintiff, who was a student at Yorkville High School in Illinois, alleges that Hastert agreed to pay him $3.5 million if he did not reveal the sexual abuse. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff suffered panic attacks, unemployment, bouts of depression and psychiatric treatment as a result of the past abuse.

Johnson & Johnson Seeks Court Change After $195M in Talc Powder Lawsuits
spacer image
Following a $67.5 million verdict in a talc-powder lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson is seeking to have subsequent cases heard in a different court. So far, Johnson & Johnson has faced a total of $195 million verdicts over claims that its talc-based products cause ovarian cancer. All three of the lawsuits have been heard in state court in St. Louis, Missouri with the same judge presiding. The majority of the 2,500 claims made against the company by women or their families have been filed in the same court. However, Johnson & Johnson now alleges that the plaintiffs' lawyers have tainted the St. Louis jury pool with national and local television commercials in the previous year. The company claims that a disproportionate number of the ads aired in St. Louis.

Jury Awards $3M in Damages to U-Va. Dean for Rolling Stone Defamation
spacer image
A federal jury has awarded $3 million in damages to a former University of Virginia associate dean after finding that a Rolling Stone magazine article sullied her reputation by alleging that she was indifferent to allegations of a gang rape on campus. The jury determined that Nicole Eramoâ??s suffering should cost a reporter and Rolling Stone multiple millions as a result of the article, which was retracted after its serious flaws were exposed. Eramo testified during the trial that after the article published, she faced threats, lost her ability to pursue her lifeâ??s work as a sexual assault prevention advocate, and took a major hit to her professional credibility.
