Georgia Nursing Home Pays Out $1.25M Settlement Over Poor Resident Care |
A Georgia nursing home will pay $1.25 million to settle a lawsuit over poor resident care at its facility. The lawsuit alleged that the Alpharetta facility allowed an infestation of roaches, rodents, ants, and snakes, in addition to widespread mold. According to the lawsuit, residents at the facility were forced to shower together and many suffered from bed sores. Additionally, the complaint alleged that the nursing home bilked Medicare and Medicaid by providing â??effectively worthless services.â?? The Justice Department announced the settlement earlier this month and stated that the nursing home has four years to complete payment. Lois Norder, Atlanta Journal-Constitution 11/27/2017 |

Texas Church Massacre Victims Want Answers From the Air Force |
Relatives of those killed in a Texas church shooting earlier this month want to know more about how the gunman was able to purchase firearms despite a history of domestic violence. Over two dozen were killed in the attack and the alleged shooter, a former Air Force airman, died following the shooting. Lawyers for the victims filed a wrongful-death claim with the Secretary of the Air Force in an effort to determine negligence under the Federal Tort Claims Act. Twenty-six people, including as many as 14 children, were killed Nov. 5 at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. Polly Mosendz, Bloomberg 11/29/2017 |

Texas Family Files Claim Against U.S. Air Force Over Church Massacre |
Parents of one of the victims killed in the Nov. 5 shooting rampage at a Texas church filed a claim on Tuesday against the U.S. Air Force in what appeared to be the first legal action in connection to the incident. The claim was filed by Joe and Claryce Holcombe, parents of Bryan Holcombe, who was fatally shot in the back. The San Antonio couple lost nine relatives in the shooting. The administrative claim, which was filed directly with the Air Force in Washington, said the military acted negligently when it failed to report the criminal record of gunman Devin Kelly to a federal database that would have prevented him from legally purchasing a firearm.
