Healthcare

Surprise Medical Bills Occur in About 22% of all ER Visits
Patients who go to in-network emergency rooms are treated by out-of-network doctors at a â??deeply troublingâ?? rate, a trend that results in major financial hardship for consumers, a recent study finds. Patients are too often slapped with â??surprise" bills, or charges that are not covered by insurance because the emergency physician at the facility is not in-network. This happens in about one in every five ER visits nationwide, according to data published in November in the New England Journal of Medicine.
