Suit: Police Killed Family Dog for No Reason

A Des Moines couple has filed a lawsuit against local police officers who shot and killed their four-year-old dog in November 2010. Officers were responding to a report of a loose dog when they found the pet sitting in the couple's driveway, barking. Witnesses say the officers Tased the dog multiple times, causing it to scamper off and into a neighbor's backyard where officers shot her multiple times with an assault rifle. The plaintiffs accuse officers of acting inhumanely in the killing of the animal.

Ex-Official Is Charged After Deaths at Coal Mine

Federal prosecutors in West Virginia charged the highest-ranking executive to date on Wednesday in a broad investigation stemming from the 2010 explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine that killed 29 miners, a move that suggests more senior executives at Massey Energy, the mine’s operator, are likely to be prosecuted. David C. Hughart, the former president of the Green Valley Coal Company, a division of Massey, will plead guilty and is cooperating with the investigation, said R. Booth Goodwin II, the United States attorney.

Veteran Awarded $1.25 Million in Malpractice Suit

A U.S. Air Force veteran has been awarded $1.25 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against a VA hospital where he contracted hepatitis C during a colonoscopy. The virus was allegedly transmitted through "improperly cleaned equipment" at a hospital in Florida. The judge ruled, despite testimony from doctors that "strongly suggested" the man could not have contracted the disease from the equipment, that the plaintiff "had no other risks associated with contracting the virus."

FAMU Asks for Hazing Death Suit to be Dismissed

Officials at Florida A&M University have requested that a wrongful death suit filed against the school over a 2011 fatal hazing incident be dismissed. Lawyers for the college said the student that died "willingly submitted to a hazing ritual to gain respect of certain band members," and therefore the school should not be held liable. The victim's family is requesting the suit go before a jury.
