Manslaughter Charges Filed in Deadly 2012 Platform Blast

A federal grand jury indicted two companies, Black Elk Energy Offshore Operations LLC and Grand Isle Shipyards Inc, on involuntary manslaughter charges and three people also face charges in a deadly 2012 explosion and fire on an oil production platform in the Gulf of Mexico, the Justice Department said. Black Elk Energy's platform had been 'shut in' for several weeks and wasn't producing oil at the time of the blast, but workers were on the platform preparing to resume production.

Lawsuit: Men Injured by Exploding E-Cigarettes

Three men have filed a lawsuit alleging that they were injured when the batteries inside their e-cigarettes exploded. The complaint cites injuries including shattered teeth, the loss of half a finger and second-degree burns. According to the lawsuit, about 90 percent of e-cigarette components are made by companies in China, who are not held accountable. The lawsuit was filed by the three men on Thursday and names the makers, wholesalers and retailers of e-cigarettes as defendants.

Female Attorney Paid Less Than Male Counterpart, Suit Alleges

A female attorney from New Mexico has filed a lawsuit alleging that she was paid significantly less than her male peer. The woman has filed her lawsuit against the 2nd Judicial Court alleging that her male counterpart was paid thousands of dollars more for the same work. The lawsuit further alleges that the plaintiff was retaliated against when she complained about the pay discrepancy. Also named as defendants in the lawsuit are the court's executive, the state and Attorney General Hector Balderas. The lawsuit cites a violation of the Fair Pay for Women Act and the Whistleblower Protection Act.

Home Depot Continued to Sell Recalled Items

Home Depot and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have announced that Home Depot continued to sell recalled products. According to the announcement on Wednesday, Home Depot carried about two dozen items in its stores that had been subject to recalls. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that the products could put consumers at risk for shocks and burns, among other things. The included products were recalled from 2012 until this year.

Jury Awards $10.1M in Meningitis Malpractice Case

A jury has awarded $10.1 million to a Pennsylvania mother and her son after doctors failed to diagnose his bacterial meningitis. The lawsuit alleges that doctors at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia failed to give a timely diagnose to the boy when he was 11 months old. According to the complaint, the boy, now 6, suffers from hearing loss, language disorder, developmental and learning delays, and a loss of balance.
