Amtrak's
New Arbitration Agreement to Block Future Lawsuits |
|
Amtrak
has established a new Arbitration Agreement that will prevent passengers from
filing lawsuits in the case of train derailments. The new agreement states
that passenger claims must go through a single arbitrator, instead of a judge
or jury. The announcement comes days after Amtrak was ordered by a jury to pay
$4.5 million to a woman injured in a 2007 derailment in Washington.

NTSB:
Uber Driver Mostly at Fault for Fatal Self-Driving Crash |
|
The
National Transportation Safety Board found that the operator of a self-driving
Uber that hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe last year was the primary cause
of the accident because she was watching "The Voice" on her phone instead of
the road. The agency identified several other contributory causes in its final
report submitted on Tuesday. Officials called out Uber's lax safety culture,
the pedestrian who was high on methamphetamine, and the state of Arizona's
lack of safety requirements for the cars.

Family
Sues Lafayette College Students Over Son's Alcohol-Related Death |
|
A judge
will allow a lawsuit against Lafayette College students who failed to help a
dying student to proceed. According to the lawsuit, filed in Northampton
County Court, two students failed to seek medical attention for a student who
fell and hit his head while drinking. The complaint alleges the students were
negligent for putting the student in bed, rather than seeking medical
attention. The student died in the hospital from a skull fracture and bleeding
on the brain on Sept. 11, 2017.
