Student Water Polo Player Files Suit After Concussion

A California student has filed a lawsuit alleging that her school did not "provide proper medical treatment for a concussion she suffered during a water polo practice." The student athlete suffered a concussion during practice, and according to the lawsuit she filed against the school district, her parents were not notified and she was not given proper treatment. The incident occurred in November 2012 when the plaintiff was hit in the head during practice, became unconscious and slipped under the water. After she resurfaced, the coach continued with the practice. The lawsuit against the Redondo Beach Unified School District seeks unspecified damages.

Couple Misdiagnosed with STD Files Lawsuit

An Alabama couple has filed a lawsuit after the husband was misdiagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease, causing the wife to undergo unnecessary medical tests. According to the lawsuit, the husband was required to give a blood sample while being held in Madison County Jail in April 2010. Officials at the facility told him that he had syphilis and transferred him to the health department for treatment. After the wife was informed, she began taking a 14-day treatment to which she had an adverse physical reaction. Later, the couple learned that the tests were in error and neither of them had syphilis. The lawsuit names the Madison County Jail's health provider as defendant.

Google to Pay $17 Million to Settle Privacy Case

spacer image

Google agreed on Monday to pay $17 million to 37 states and the District of Columbia in a wide-reaching settlement over tracking consumers online without their knowledge. The case involved Google’s bypassing of privacy settings in Apple’s Safari browser to use cookies to track users and show them advertisements in 2011 and 2012. Google has said it discontinued circumventing the settings early last year, after the practice was publicly reported, and stopped tracking Safari users and showing them personalized ads.

A jury's finding of no wrongdoing against a Syracuse dentistry accused of mistreating poor children will not stand after a "creepy" jury stalker prejudiced the verdict, a judge ruled Monday. The man said he was hired by the dental clinic's insurance company, AIG and told the judge he was hired to observe the trial, nothing more.

The oil and gas boom in Texas has given rise to a growing number of scam cases in which investors — often blue-collar retirees — have been lured by the promise of high returns on supposedly low-risk investments.

Watchful Eye in Nursing Homes

On Nov. 1 Oklahoma became the third state — along with New Mexico and Texas — to explicitly permit residents in long-term care facilities to maintain surveillance cameras in their rooms. Although some states have administrative guidelines for electronic monitoring, most legislative efforts have stalled because of questions about liability and, in particular, privacy rights, raised by facility owners, unions, elder care lawyers and families.
