DuPont Plant Remains Closed as Search For Answers Begins

spacer image

The DuPont plant where four workers were killed Saturday in La Porte remained locked down Monday, with some areas too contaminated to inspect as a result of an unexplained and catastrophic chemical release. Experts told the Houston Chronicle that it appeared that a leak likely prompted levels of the chemical in gaseous form to rise to more than 150 parts per million. At that dose, not even a full protective suit with supplied oxygen would have been enough to give workers a chance to survive exposure. La Porte firefighters in full gear were unable to access the area of the accident and recover the bodies until hours after the deaths, Jeff Suggs, the city's emergency services coordinator, told the Chronicle.

Jeep Recall in Spotlight After Death in Michigan

spacer image

A 2013 recall of 1.6 million Jeeps over fuel-tank fires is becoming increasingly fraught as customers report a lack of parts and other problems preventing repairs to the vehicles. The challenges were highlighted last week when a Michigan woman died 15 miles from Chrysler Group’s headquarters in a Jeep that had been recalled nearly 16 months earlier. Auto regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has linked 51 deaths to fiery rear-end collisions involving the older-model sport-utility vehicles. It sought the recall citing risks of the vehicles’ gasoline tanks splitting and catching fire in rear-end collisions.
