Kimberly-Clark has issued a recall of Kotex Natural Balance Security Unscented Tampons after it was discovered the raw materials used to make the products were contaminated with bacterium. The bacterium, Enterobacter sakazakii, may cause vaginal and urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease and other more serious risks. The recall covers both 18-count and 36-count packages.  Francisca Ortega , Houston Chronicle  11/14/2011

Jury Awards $400,000 in Wrongful Death Suit

spacer image

A California jury has awarded a local man $400,000 after his 5-year-old disabled daughter drowned at a children's center in Desert Hot Springs. The girl was taking part in hydrotherapy during an after-school program and the lawsuit said she was not given a life vest before entering the pool. The girl was left unsupervised, the suit claimed, and was found submerged in a mineral pool.  Joy Juedes , The Desert Sun  11/14/2011

Three women who say they were fired by Lear Corp. for filing workers' compensation claims have been awarded more than $280,000 in lost wages and damages by a Tarrant County district court jury. The workers, who were terminated in October 2009, plan to petition Judge Donald Cosby for an order reinstating them to their jobs. By a 10-2 verdict, the jury sided with the claims of Phyllis Carolina, Karen Rogers and Ronda Alexander, all of whom said they suffered serious injuries while working at Lear's Arlington plant.  Bob Cox, Fort Worth Star-Telegram  11/05/2011

Data: Automated Defibrillators Not Saving More Lives

spacer image

New research suggests that newer automated defibrillators may save less lives than the older, low-tech models, and shortcomings of the equipment lead to around 1,000 deaths in hospitals each year. Soon after the American Heart Association recommended hospitals switch the automated devices, problems with the devices began to arise, such as the failure to turn on, or sudden shut-downs. Statistics also show that the new devices are failing to improve the quickness of which the first shock is delivered as "many less-skilled nurses apparently find it intimidating to operate any defibrillator, and balk at using even the simpler, newer machines."  Lilly Fowler , Fair Warning  11/14/2011
