Pfizer Settles $67.5 Million Shareholder Suit

Pfizer Inc. will pay $67.5 million to settle a shareholder lawsuit over the antidepressant drug Pristiq. According to the suit, shareholders said they were misled about the risks associated with the drug, and that their shares lost "more than $7.6 billion of market value" in 2007 after the FDA denied approval of the drug as a treatment for hot flashes.

Suit Filed over Handling of Student's Nut Allergy

A lawsuit has been filed against Fox Chapel Area School District near Pittsburgh over the alleged mismanagement of an elementary school student's severe nut allergy. The lawsuit claims the student suffered multiple allergic reactions while at school and was forced to sit at an isolated desk in his classroom, which led to teasing from other students. The lawsuit cites a violation of the federal Rehabilitation Act and "disability-based harassment."

Neighbor Files Suit over Dangerous Pit Bull

A Wilmette, Ill., man has filed a lawsuit against his neighbors, claiming their pit bull has put the entire block in danger. In the suit, the man says that on three separate occasions the dog has escaped from the home and shown "aggressive, vicious behavior" toward people. The dog has allegedly attempted to attack local children and other neighbors' dogs.

Transgender Woman Files Suit Against Park Ranger

A transgender woman has filed a suit against the U.S. Bureau of Land Management after she was Tased in the groin by a park ranger in the Imperial County desert. According to the suit, the ranger approached the plaintiff's group during a photo shoot and requested identification; the plaintiff says the ranger was "polite" until he learned of her gender change. She claims he then "became rude and stunned her twice." The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

Doctor Decapitated Baby During Birth, Suit Says

A Missouri couple have filed a lawsuit against a local obstetrician who allegedly separated their baby's head during a botched delivery in March 2011. According to the suit, the mother had to have an emergency birth at 28 weeks due to complications with the child; the child was delivered breach, and the suit claims that as the doctor tried to pull the boy loose, he "separated (the boy's) head from his cervical spine." The doctor then allegedly forced the child back into the womb and preformed an emergency C-section. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Suit: Montana Bar Responsible for Fatal DWI Wreck

The death of a Washington state man has prompted a lawsuit against a Montana bar, accusing bar employees of over-serving a patron on the night of Nov. 9, 2010. That patron was later in a car accident that killed the victim. The suit claims the man was "visibly drunk" while at the bar, and not only did bartenders continue to serve him, but supplied him with a "to-go cup" when he left the establishment. The suit is seeking unspecified damages from wrongful death, medical and burial costs and future economic loss.

California Couple Awarded $4.5 Million in Suit

A northern California jury has awarded $4.5 million to a local couple who said four Kern County Sheriff's deputies beat their son to death. The jury ruled the officers "acted negligently, causing the death of [the man] and serious emotional distress to his parents, who witnessed the beating."

Hospital Blamed in Overdose Lawsuit

A Hampton, Va., woman has filed a lawsuit against the Hampton VA Medical Center, claiming the center is responsible for the death of her sister. According to the suit, doctors at the medical center prescribed the plaintiff's sister "too much of the antipsychotic drug Seroquel," on which she overdosed in November 2010. The suit also claims that center doctors were aware the woman had previously tried to kill herself on multiple occasions, but still increased her access to medication.
