A couple from Alameda County, California has been awarded $70 million by a jury for asbestos-contaminated products the man used while a U.S. Navy machinist that caused his cancer. In December 2013, the man was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung. According to the lawsuit, the man got cancer from working with asbestos-containing materials that were supplied to him by the U.S. Navy. After a six-week trial, the man and his wife were awarded $70 million by a California jury. The plaintiff retired from the Navy in 1990 after 26 years as a machinist and nuclear inspector.

Navy SEAL Author Files $8M Lawsuit Against Attorney

A Navy SEAL who has been ordered to pay $4.5 million to the federal government for writing a book documenting the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden has filed a lawsuit against the attorney who advised him. The plaintiff published the book without first clearing it with the federal government and must now pay $4.5 million for releasing details of the event. He contends in the lawsuit against his attorney that he was told he did not have to clear the manuscript with the Department of Defense before publishing. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, N.Y., alleges that the plaintiff's attorney told him he had government clearance to review the manuscript. The lawsuit seeks $8 million in compensation from the plaintiff's attorney.

GM to Court: Not Liable for Claims Over Pre-Bankruptcy cars

GM said in a court filing on Wednesday that it should not have to face lawsuits based on safety issues in cars made before its 2009 bankruptcy, including a faulty ignition switch that led to the recall of 2.6 million cars earlier this year. The brief, filed in Manhattan bankruptcy court, lays out GM's legal arguments and is the opening salvo in litigation from GM drivers who say the automaker should make them whole for losses related to recalls this year.

Ford Issues 5 Recalls Covering 202,000 Vehicles
spacer image
Ford is recalling more than 202,000 cars, vans and trucks in North America in five separate recalls to fix gas leaks, air bag sensors, stalling and other issues. The company says the problems have caused one accident, but it's not aware of injuries in any of the cases. The biggest of the recalls announced Tuesday affects about 135,000 F-150 pickups and Ford Flex family haulers from the 2014 model year. Faulty passenger seat weight sensors can stop air bags from inflating in crashes. Dealers will widen a gap between the seat frame and track, and then recalibrate the sensors. Also covered are some 2009 through 2014 F-150s that were serviced for seat track problems this year.
