Highway Official Stood By Guardrail System Amid Doubts
U.S. highway safety officials defended a widely used guardrail system's crashworthiness even as they worried whether its design had been altered in a potentially deadly way, according to internal e-mails. Starting in 2012, a Federal Highway Administration engineer fielded e-mails from state officials, plaintiffs' lawyers and others asking about a change that Trinity Industries Inc. had made to its guardrail system years earlier.

Air-Bag Recall Expands Again as Maker Finds Part Defect

Takata will recall the SDI-X inflators manufactured from June 16, 2008, to June 20, 2014, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said today in a statement on its website. An incorrect outer baffle could cause the unit to rupture, the agency said. Owners will be notified by vehicle manufacturers. The defective inflators were in General Motors Co. and Nissan Motor Co. models the automakers decided to recall in June and October, respectively, according to documents on the NHTSA website and an e-mail from Alby Berman, a Takata spokeswoman. GM recalled 29,019 Chevrolet Cruze small cars from model years 2013 and 2014. The new recalls pertain to vehicles newer than those covered by the broader Takata actions, which involve products from the 2000 through 2008 model years.

Herbalife to Settle Pyramid Scheme Lawsuit for $15M
spacer image
Herbalife, a nutrition and supplements company, has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a lawsuit by a former distributor who alleges that the company was operating a pyramid scheme. The 18-month long class action lawsuit was granted preliminary approval of the settlement on Friday, which would include $15 million in cash and $2.5 million in product returns. The lawsuit was originally filed by a housing inspector from California who alleged that distributors failed to make much money selling the products. As part of the settlement, Herbalife would also alter its business model for at least three years. The company has not admitted to using a pyramid scheme and denies any wrongdoing.
