A lawsuit has been filed against three Alabama cities over the death of a local man who jumped into Lake Guntersville and drowned after leading police on a high-speed chase. Police were executing a warrant on the victim when he fled, but the family's attorney claims officers "assaulted" him and "sicced dogs on him," forcing him off the bridge into the water 75 feet below. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Lawsuits Say Old Strip Mines Still Polluting

Environmental activists say three reclaimed mountaintop removal mining sites are still polluting West Virginia waterways, and they’re suing the current landowners in a novel attempt to stop it. The lawsuits filed in U.S. District Court in Huntington say state and federal regulators are doing nothing to end water pollution from old surface mines after they’ve been cleaned up, graded and replanted with vegetation, so the landowners must be held accountable.

Psychiatric Hospital Scrutinized After Patient Death
spacer image
More than a year after a woman died after being restrained at Terrell State Hospital, federal officials opened an investigation into her death and say they found problems so severe that they “represent immediate jeopardy to patient health and safety.” That finding prompted the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to order the Northeast Texas hospital to come up with a plan to fix violations by June 4 or risk losing about $4.6 million in federal money. That’s about 9 percent of the hospital’s $49 million annual budget.

With Money at Risk, Hospitals Push Staff to Wash Hands
spacer image
At North Shore University Hospital on Long Island, motion sensors, like those used for burglar alarms, go off every time someone enters an intensive care room. The sensor triggers a video camera, which transmits its images halfway around the world to India, where workers are checking to see if doctors and nurses are performing a critical procedure: washing their hands. Studies have shown that without encouragement, hospital workers wash their hands as little as 30 percent of the time that they interact with patients. So in addition to the video snooping, hospitals across the country are training hand-washing coaches, handing out rewards like free pizza and coffee coupons, and admonishing with “red cards.”

Wrongful Death

Student's Death Caused by Hazing, Lawsuit Says
spacer image
The family of a Bethune-Cookman University student who died in a Florida car crash last year has filed suit against the school, alleging the crash was the result of a hazing incident. The car's driver fell asleep at the wheel, crashing the vehicle into a tree; the suit claims the victim and the driver had been deprived of sleep by a school fraternity as part of a hazing ritual, which contributed to the victim's death. The lawsuit is seeking more than $15,000 in damages.
