Baylor, Former Staffer Resolve Title IX Lawsuit Alleging Retaliation

Baylor University and a former financial aid staffer resolved a lawsuit Tuesday in which the staffer claimed she faced retaliation for reinstating the scholarship of a former football player wrongfully accused of sexual assault. Lyn Wheeler Kinyon was retaliated against and later fired, she claimed in the suit, after she oversaw a successful appeal process for former football player Jeremy Faulk, who transferred to Baylor in December 2015 and was accused of sexually assaulting a woman four months later.

The city of Arlington will pay $850,000 ?to the family of Christian Taylor, a 19-year-old college football player who was unarmed when he was shot and killed by a police officer investigating a burglary at a car dealership in 2015. Immediately after the vote, the city released a written statement: 'This pre-suit settlement is not an admission of guilt or liability. Rather, it is a mutually agreed upon resolution to this unfortunate incident which avoids the personal and financial cost of litigation for all parties involved and dismisses any potential claims.'

Doctor who Faced Retaliation Wins Lawsuit
spacer image
A prominent Boston neurosurgeon was illegally forced out of his previous job at a New York hospital for strongly objecting to a policy that allowed another surgeon to perform complex spine surgeries on two patients simultaneously, a judge ruled. New York Supreme Court Justice James P. Murphy ? ruled after a bench trial that University Hospital in Syracuse retaliated against Holsapple after he spoke out about the surgeon running two operating rooms at once. Double-booking, as the practice is sometimes called, triggered a fierce dispute among doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital in recent years, leading to the 2015 dismissal of an orthopedic surgeon who opposed it. But Dr. James Holsapple may be the first doctor to win a lawsuit alleging he faced retaliation for challenging the practice.

Department of Justice Targets Fiat Chrysler in Emissions Lawsuit
spacer image
The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles over diesel emissions. The lawsuit alleges that Fiat has violated the Clean Air Act by creating a cheat for emissions testing. According to the complaint, Fiat was able to create software that indicated lower emissions during the testing of 104,000 Ram pickups and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. However, the effectiveness of the emissions control center was reduced during normal driving conditions. The lawsuit, which claims four violations, could result in billions of dollars in penalties for Fiat Chrysler.
