Miami Police Fired 100 Shots at Man, Suit Says |
The fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man by Miami police has prompted a lawsuit by the victim's family against two Miami area police departments. Police fired more than 100 shots at the man in his vehicle because he was "driving erratically" during Miami Beach's Urban Beach Weekend. Police said the man fired shots first, but analysis of a gun found in the man's car showed it had not been fired. Four bystanders were injured in the shooting. The suit accuses police of using excessive force and is seeking unspecified damages. Staff Report, Reuters 05/21/2013 |

Florist Files Countersuit over Gay Marriage Refusal |
A florist in Washington state who is being sued for refusing to provide flowers for a same-sex wedding has filed a countersuit, saying her right to religious freedom gives her the right to refuse. The Washington attorney general filed a consumer protection suit against the florist, which she says is a violation of her 1st Amendment rights. "Everyone knows that plenty of florists are willing to assist in same-sex ceremonies, so the state has no reason to force [the florist] to violate her deeply held beliefs," the woman's lawyer said in a statement. Border Patrol Agent Hit with Wrongful Death Suit over Shooting |
The family of a woman who was killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Chula Vista has filed suit against the agent and the agency, calling the killing unjustified. The police report says the woman hit the officer with her car and fled with him on the hood while leaving an apartment complex, but witnesses at the scene say the officer jumped on the woman's car to stop her from leaving, and then shot her five times as she tried to reverse and drive away. The suit also claims the agent had a history of disciplinary issues as a sheriff's deputy and should have never been hired. Greg Moran, San Diego Union Tribune 05/21/2013 |
