Catholic Parishes in New Mexico Named in Child Sex Abuse Lawsuit

Two Catholic parishes in New Mexico and several dioceses have been hit with a lawsuit centered on child molestation by a priest. The lawsuit was filed in the 2nd Judicial District Court in Bernalillo County by a man who alleges he was sexually abused by the priest as a child. Named as defendants in the complaint are Servants of Paraclete, the Catholic Diocese of El Paso, Diocese of Worcester, Diocese of Las Cruces, the Immaculate Conception Parish and St. Jude Parish. The plaintiff seeks a jury trial and restitution.

Foodborne illness investigations have slowed and food recalls have plummeted to their lowest levels in years because of disruptions in America's multi-layered food safety system caused by the novel coronavirus, a USA TODAY investigation found. The pandemic struck the system at every level ' from the federal agencies tasked with stopping contaminated food before it leaves farms and factories to the state health departments that test sick residents for foodborne illnesses like E. coli.

Small businesses across North Texas and the nation have awakened to the stark reality that they are in for a lengthy fight after their insurance companies denied their business interruption insurance claims. Legal experts are watching to see how the courts will sort out the legal quagmire, complicated by the absence of any case law. Business advocates say the insurance industry and its powerful lobby are trying to escape liability during the global public health crisis. But insurers argue that the policies were never intended to cover catastrophic losses from a pandemic, and the number and extent of the claims would put them out of business.

Texas Meatpacking Plant Remains Open

A Texas meat processing plant that is the epicenter of COVID-19 cases in Angelina County will remain open, according to a company statement. Employees at the Pilgrim's Pride plant in Lufkin represent 50 of the 107 confirmed cases in the county, according to the Angelina County Office of Emergency Management. The county's one COVID-19 death was a Pilgrim's Pride worker.

Inside Austin's Deadliest Nursing Home

Since the outbreak began in late March, the virus has stalked the West Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Austin. West Oaks has averaged at least two deaths a week. More than half of its 125 patients have been diagnosed with the virus. Fifteen have died. Two dozen staff members have tested positive.

Son of Cruise Passenger Files Suit Over Father's COVID-19 Death
The son of a cruise passenger who died of COVID-19 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Princess and Carnival Cruise Lines. The lawsuit alleges his father was "forced to die alone" due to the negligence of the staff of the Grand Princess cruise ship and its owners. As the lawsuit states, "Princess failed at every turn to inform passengers, properly clean its boat or take proper safety precautions" during the coronavirus outbreak. The complaint was recently filed in federal court in Los Angeles.

Alabama Seafood Company Files Suit Against Insurer Over COVID-19 Loses
Birmingham, Alabama-based Automatic Seafood and Oysters has filed a federal class action lawsuit against its insurer over financial losses suffered by the business since the COVID-19 pandemic began. According to the lawsuit, Cincinnati Insurance Company did not pay the establishment on its loss of business income policy. Automatic Seafood claims it has lost out on business income and incurred expenses due to the coronavirus. "Under the policy, defendant promised to cover these losses and expenses, and is obligated to pay for them," states the complaint filed in Birmingham federal court.
