Verizon to Pay $125 Million to Woman Paralyzed by Fallen Pole

Verizon will pay $125 million to the family of a woman who was paralyzed after a weathered pole fell on her. The 50-year-old woman was injured on Jan. 23, 2017, in Union City when she was struck by the fallen pole while waiting at a bus stop. She suffered multiple fractures of her spine, ribs, was paralyzed from her mid-chest down and now has limited use of her left arm, brain injuries and vision problems, stated the complaint. Court records show that Verizon took full responsibility for the condition of the pole.

Three Elmhurst Hospital Workers Die After Managing Protective Gear
Three workers at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens have died of the coronavirus after managing the hospital's supply of protective gear. The three employees were responsible for handing out the masks, gloves and other protective gear inside Elmhurst, a public hospital at the center of the city's outbreak. A lawsuit filed April 20 by the largest nurses union in New York alleges the Department of Health has turned hospitals into "petri dishes where the virus can fester and then spread to other health care workers."

Family Files Lawsuit Against Royal Caribbean

The family of a cruise crew member who died after testing positive for COVID-19 filed a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean Cruises on Tuesday saying the company failed to protect its employees as the pandemic ravaged sailings around the world. The wrongful death case filed in circuit court in Miami says Pujiyoko, 27, worked in housekeeping on the Symphony of the Seas and suffered from flu-like symptoms including a fever and shortness of breath but was not tested for six days.

US Senators Want Probe of Veterans Homes

A group of U.S. senators is seeking an investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs' oversight of homes for aging veterans amid a spate of coronavirus deaths at the state-run centers. In a letter sent Tuesday, the senators asked the head of the Government Accountability Office to look into the VA and states' roles in ensuring veterans get proper care at the homes and whether the agency or states have a system to 'capture real time spikes in mortality rates,' among other things.

TX Restaurant Tells Workers: No Face Masks

Texas restaurants that reopened at partial capacity last week had a choice to make: Whether or not their employees should wear masks. Hillstone Restaurant Group told employees, no face masks or face coverings of any kind, according to an employee. That employee, who did not want to be identified publicly, expressed discomfort and was told to think about it'and then was removed from the schedule, the employee told CBS Dallas.
