Blue Bell to Plead Guilty, Pay $19M Over Listeria Outbreak

Texas-based ice cream manufacturer Blue Bell Creameries has agreed to pay $19.35 million and plead guilty to charges that it shipped contaminated products linked to a 2015 listeriosis outbreak, the U.S. Justice Department said on Friday. Prosecutors also filed charges in federal court in Austin, Texas, against the companyâ??s former president, Paul Kruse, who they said participated in a scheme to conceal from customers what Blue Bell knew about the listeria contamination.

Oklahoma Drilling Company Settles Age, Disability Discrimination Suit

Horizontal Well Drillers LLC (HWD) will pay $650,000 to settle a federal age and disability discrimination lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of a fired worker and hundreds of unsuccessful job applicants. The Oklahoma-based oil and gas drilling contractor was accused in the lawsuit of terminating a new hire based on information from a health exam and rejecting rig hand applicants who were older than 40 because of their age.

Walmart Pays $14 Million to Settle Pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit

On Wednesday, a federal judge approved a $14 million settlement of a lawsuit against Walmart alleging pregnancy discrimination. The class action complaint alleged the retailer discriminated against pregnant workers by denying them necessary workplace accommodations. The seven-year-old case is one of the first pregnancy accommodation cases in the nation to settle as a class action. The settlement was approved by U.S. District Judge Staci M. Yandle of the Southern District of Illinois and will be distributed among 4,000 women.

Feds Send Coronavirus Strike Force to Amarillo in Response to Outbreaks in Meatpacking Plants

Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson announced on Saturday that a team of federal officials would arrive in the Texas Panhandle to help "attack" outbreaks in the plants and take over testing and investigations of people contracting the new coronavirus. The latest figures reported by the state put the number of people who have been infected in Potter County at 684, giving it an infection rate of 5.66 per 1,000 residents. Thatâ??s roughly four times higher than the infection rates in Harris and Dallas counties.

Mitchell Schnurman: Older Workers Now Have to Manage the Coronavirus Economy

Many believe theyâ??ve faced age discrimination in the past, along with concerns about their ability to adapt to new technology and take directions from younger leaders. But it was always verboten to blame their age, at least out loud. Now federal and state leaders are publicly saying, â??Stay home if youâ??re 65,â?? at a time when over 30 million Americans have filed unemployment claims. â??With this taint, finding a job is gonna be nearly impossible,â?? said Alicia Munnell, director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. â??A lot of â?˜em will just grab Social Securityâ?? retirement benefits.
