Hazing Suit Against FAMU Won't Be Thrown Out

A Florida judge has ruled that a hazing lawsuit against Florida A&M University over the death of drum major Robert Champion can go forward. The school had argued that Champion had "voluntarily" submitted to the hazing, violating state law and school policies. The judge disagreed, saying "it is clear to this court that a victim of hazing cannot commit hazing."

Woman Sexually, Religiously Harassed, Suit Says

A former employee of Washington County in the Salt Lake City area has filed suit against the county, alleging she was a victim of "religious and sexual harassment." In her suit, the plaintiff claims she was subjected to religious harassment by the county administrator because she is not Mormon and suffered "unwanted gender-based [sexual] comments." After complaining about these actions, she was fired, the suit says. The plaintiff is seeking $300,000 in damages.

Another Bank to Pay in Defaulted Mortgage Lawsuit

Flagstar Bancorp Inc. has announced it will pay $110 million to settle a lawsuit over the misrepresentation of quality loans. The suit was filed by a bond company that had agreed to insure some of Flagstar's mortgage-backed transactions, but the mortgage defaults mounted, and the plaintiff ended up paying out $165 million on the transactions.

250 Stent Procedure Malpractice Suits Settled

Nearly 250 lawsuits against a Baltimore cardiologist and St. Joseph Medical Center were settled this week, the Baltimore Sun reports. The lawsuits accused the doctor of performing "unnecessary stent procedures" on patients, leaving lasting medical conditions. The plaintiffs alleged the doctor overstated their conditions, allowing him to justify the stent procedures, which increased his pay.
