She Said She Was Raped on a Flight. American Airlines Called it a 'Nuisance Claim.' | | Aubrey Lane boarded American Airlines Flight 1280 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. There, Lane said she was trapped in the lavatory and raped by a noticeably intoxicated man who’d been sitting next to her during the flight. Nine months later, Lane’s case is still in the hands of the FBI with little visible sign of progress. The agency did not return a request for comment. American described Lane’s allegations as a nuisance claim in a December letter that offered her $5,000 after her attorneys brought her allegation to the airline. Former Equifax Executive Accused of Insider Trading | | Ten days before millions of U.S. consumers learned about the Equifax cyber breach that exposed their personal information to hackers last fall, one of the credit-reporting giant's executives apparently was more worried about the effect on his stock holdings. Jun Ying, who had been next in line to become the firm's global chief information officer, sold his Equifax stake before the firm publicly disclosed the attack that raised the specter of identity theft and potential fraud using data for approximately 148 million customers, federal civil and criminal authorities charged on Wednesday. Ying vested all of his stock options after learning about the breach and then sold the shares, reaping nearly $1 million, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged in a civil complaint filed in Atlanta federal court. An Alaska Airlines Pilot Said a Captain Drugged and Raped Her. He Still Works for the Airline. | | On a layover one evening last June, Alaska Airlines co-pilot Betty Pina had a glass of wine. Then came a second glass, brought to her by the captain she was paired with for a three-day assignment. The next thing Pina remembers is finding herself in a vomit-soaked bed, naked from the waist down, she alleges in a lawsuit filed Wednesday against the airline. Pina, a 39-year-old military veteran, says Alaska Airlines allowed the captain to drug and rape her, and subsequently failed to hold the captain accountable after she reported the incident to airline officials more than half a year ago. The captain, according to the lawsuit, is a veteran pilot who remains employed by the airline. Marwa Eltagouri , The Washington Post 03/15/2018 | Read Article: The Washington Post |
South Dakota Sues Opioid Makers | | South Dakota on Wednesday sued three major drugmakers, accusing them of deceptively marketing prescription opioids and contributing to a nationwide epidemic. Marty Jackley, the state’s attorney general, announced civil claims against Purdue Pharma LP, a unit of Endo International Plc and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen unit. The lawsuit makes South Dakota at least the 16th U.S. state to sue manufacturers over opioids, which can be used to treat pain. Jackley said the drugmakers have violated Medicaid fraud laws and state deceptive trade laws, and created a public nuisance by spreading false information about opioids’ risks and benefits. Editorial: How Dangerous Doctors Escape Despite Data Bank | | Three decades ago, Congress passed a law designed to change all that. Incompetent practitioners will no longer be able to escape detection by moving from state to state," Health and Human Services Secretary Louis Sullivan said when the National Practitioner Data Bank came online in 1990. It hasn't quite worked that way. The database now contains 1.3 million reports on doctors, making it the nation's most comprehensive resource for negative information on doctors. Yet many state medical boards fail to use it, an irresponsible decision that puts their residents at risk. Editors, USA Today 03/15/2018 | Read Article: USA Today |
