$2M Settlement Ends Accusations that L.A. Credit-Repair Firms Misled Consumers |

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau alleged that a group of related L.A. credit-repair companies didn't make that clear and misled consumers about how much their credit scores might improve. On Tuesday, the companies' former owners and a business associate agreed to pay $2 million to settle the CFPB's allegations, which also included claims that the companies improperly charged fees before showing that credit-repair work had been done. The bureau alleged the bad practices took place at a handful of firms — including Commercial Credit Consultants, Accurise, Park View Legal and Prime Credit Consultants — from 2009 to 2014, the year some of the companies were sold to a private equity firm.

E-Cigarette Batteries Explosion Subject of Couple's Lawsuit |

A lawsuit has been filed by an Illinois couple against two Joliet vape shops over an incidents of exploding e-cigarette batteries. The lawsuit alleges that batteries bought from the stores exploded in the man's pants, causing him severe burns. According to the lawsuit filed in Cook County circuit court, the man suffered second and third-degree burns in the incident and his injuries have hurt the couple's love life. The lawsuit filed against Rockin Vape, Tobacco Zone and battery manufacturer LG alleges negligence and product liability.

Nursing Home Resident's Pain Meds Stolen, Lawsuit Settled for $1M |

A South Carolina assisted living center has settled a lawsuit over a patient's stolen pain pills for $1 million. The lawsuit was filed by the sister of the resident whose pain pills were stolen while he was dying of pancreatic cancer. Oakleaf Village of Lexington agreed to settle the lawsuit with the man's sister for $1 million, but the settlement did not include an admission of fault. The 75-year-old man died shortly after the medication theft was discovered, although his death was not related to the lack of pain medication.

Three Bars Responsible for Fatal Illinois Crash, Says Lawsuit |

An Illinois family has filed suit against three bars after a pub crawl ended in a fatal crash, killing two people. The family of the 28-year-old man who crashed his car and killed another driver has filed suit against three bars that were part of the pub crawl. The man was participating in the pub crawl, involving multiple bars in different towns when he crashed his car into another car. The lawsuit alleges that the bars were responsible for the man's level of intoxication at the time of the crash.

Driver Involved in New Braunfels Church Bus Crash Indicted |

The driver who collided with a New Braunfels church bus in south Texas has been indicted on more than a dozen charges of intoxication manslaughter. The man was driving when he struck the bus, killing 13 people on board. He is now facing 13 two-count indictments of manslaughter and intoxication manslaughter and a two-count indictment of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury. The driver was named as the defendant in a lawsuit filed by the son of one man killed in the crash. The lawsuit alleged that the man was driving under the influence of prescription drugs and marijuana.
