Calif. Jury Hits TransUnion With Record $60M FCRA Verdict

A California federal jury found Tuesday that TransUnion violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act when it conflated a class of consumers with similarly named terrorists and criminals from a government watch list, awarding statutory and punitive damages topping $60 million in what the plaintiffs' attorneys called the largest FCRA verdict to date. TransUnion LLC's credit reports checked consumers against the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control database, which lists terrorists, drug traffickers and other criminals. But, the suit alleged, reports about law-abiding consumers were sometimes linked to similarly named criminals on the OFAC watch list.

University of Texas at Arlington, senior Thomas Klocke had a confrontation with a classmate. The incident led to an investigation of Klocke before he killed himself at Grapevine's Silver Lake Marina Park in June 2016. UTA's mishandling of the case destroyed the Southlake 24-year-old's academic future and reputation, according to a lawsuit his father, Wayne, filed in April against the university and the student who accused him.

SCOTUS Decision Impacts Johnson & Johnson Talc Cases

A recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to impact a number of lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson over links from talc powder to ovarian cancer. The high court ruled that state courts cannot hear claims against companies that are not based in the state when the alleged injuries did not occur there. A fifth of the plaintiffs filing suit against Johnson & Johnson have cases pending in court in St. Louis. Four cases where juries granted $307 million in verdicts on the St. Louis docket involve out-of-state plaintiffs suing an out-of-state company. The recent decision prompted a St. Louis judge, at Johnson & Johnson's request, to grant a mistrial in the latest case.

When Joshua Brown's Tesla slammed into the side of a tractor-trailer last year at more than 70 miles per hour, the fatal accident became the world's first known car crash involving a partly autonomous vehicle. Now, government investigators say that in the minutes leading up to the collision, Brown was audibly warned six times to keep his hands on the steering wheel. He was also warned visually, seven times, on his Tesla's dashboard.
