From Incidents With Rattlesnakes to Broken Jaws, Texas Public Schools Are Immune from Lawsuits

Texas law has some of the strongest — if not the strongest — protections for public schools from lawsuits. Under the doctrine of sovereign immunity, about the only way a school and its district (including charter schools) can be successfully sued is if the injury occurred “out of the operation or use of a motor vehicle.”

$6.5M Settlement With Exotic Dancers Approved
spacer image
A federal judge in Detroit on Monday overruled objections filed by several exotic dancers and approved a $6.5 million national settlement of a class action lawsuit brought against the Déjà Vu chain of strip clubs, alleging unfair labor practices. The case centered on whether the dancers are employees or independent contractors — a classification that affects issues such as whether the clubs must pay them a minimum hourly wage or can instead charge them for doing business inside the clubs. The suit alleged the dancers were wrongly treated as independent contractors who were charged rent to perform, instead of employees who must be paid an hourly wage and provided a free workplace and other benefits.

CenturyLink Inc., is facing a class action lawsuit by an employee who alleges she was fired for bringing attention to a sales incentive scheme. The lawsuit seeks to establish a class of plaintiffs that have been harmed by the allegedly high-pressure sales culture. According to the lawsuit, the sales techniques left customers paying millions of dollars for accounts they didn't request. The telecommunications company is in the middle of a $34 billion merger with Level 3 Communications Inc.
