Government watchdog: Used car buyers may not be told of auto recalls, jeopardizing safety, Washington Post (AP) 6-16-11. Used car dealers may be selling cars and trucks that have been recalled but not repaired because manufacturers don’t send them the same recall notifications that are sent to franchised dealers, said a study by a government watchdog.

Pfizer Inc. smoking cessation aid Chantix, already carrying a warning it raises risks of suicide, may be tied to higher heart danger in patients with cardiovascular disease, U.S. regulators said. The FDA found infrequent chest pain, heart attacks and other adverse reactions in a study of 700 people with cardiovascular disease. The information will be added to the warnings and precautions section of the prescribing information for Chantix.  Catherine Larkin & Anna Edney, Bloomberg  06/17/2011

Chrysler has issued a recall of more than 11,000 vehicles manufactured this year due to problems with the steering column. The recall includes the 2011 model Jeep Wrangler, Liberty, Compass and Patriot, as well as the Dodge Journey, Avenger, Nitro and Caliber, and the Chrysler Town & Country. The company reported that during a front-end collision, the steering column may not be able to support the "occupant loads," increasing the potential for serious injury.  Aaron M. Plane Crash Plaintiffs Cannot Sue in the U.S

spacer image

A northern California district judge ruled Wednesday that family members of those killed in the 2009 crash of Air France flight 447, which killed all 228 onboard, must pursue their claims against the plane’s component manufacturers in France. The ruling potentially severely limits the damages the families can expect to recover. At a hearing a few weeks back, plaintiffs’ attorneys argued that their suit – which targets American companies, such as General Electric, Honeywell and Intel, that manufactured some of the plane’s parts – should be heard in the U.S., despite the fact that there are no more American plaintiffs with pending claims.  Patrick G. Judge Dismisses Batch of Oil Spill Claims

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier dismissed a batch of court claims that accused BP PLC and other companies sued over the massive Gulf oil spill of violating the Clean Water Act and other environmental laws saying some of the claims brought by environmental groups are moot because BP's blown-out well was killed last summer. Barbier's ruling doesn't affect thousands of claims for economic losses filed by commercial fishermen, tourism-driven businesses, property owners and others who claim the oil spill has cost them money.  Associated Press, Yahoo News  06/17/2011

US High Court Allows Class Action Against Bayer to Proceed

spacer image

The Supreme Court will let two West Virginia residents revive a lawsuit against Bayer AG over its anti-cholesterol drug Baycol, which was withdrawn from the market in 2001 after reports of a severe and sometimes fatal muscle disorder. The 8th U.S. Court of Appeals had thrown out their lawsuit out after a federal judge overseeing multistate litigation against Bayer refused to let other West Virginians file a similar class-action lawsuit against the corporation. The high court said that decision was incorrect.  Associated Press, Seattle Post-Intelligencer  06/17/2011
