A yearlong investigation by the USA TODAY Network found that port trucking companies in southern California have spent the past decade forcing drivers to finance their own trucks by taking on debt they could not afford. Companies then used that debt as leverage to extract forced labor and trap drivers in jobs that left them destitute. Brett Murphy, USA Today 06/16/2017
A federal appeals court upheld an $11 million ruling against Toyota last week in a lawsuit over a fatal crash. The lawsuit was filed by the family of three crash victims who died during or after a crash in Minnesota in 2006. A jury found that the crash was caused by an accelerator defect in a 1996 Camry that one man and two children were traveling in. The car was included in a recall of about 10 million vehicles between 2009 and 2010 over acceleration issues. The appeals court ruled that a lower court had enough evidence to conclude that Toyota was 60 percent liable for the crash and that the driver of the Camry was 40 percent liable. A lawsuit has been filed alleging that the Seventh Day Adventist Church ignored reports about a pedophile teacher who worked in California and Washington. The teacher was arrested last year for sexually assaulting two 10-year-olds in his classroom. The teacher was one of only two teachers at Mountain View Christian School in Sequim. The lawsuit was filed by The Davis Law Group of Seattle and alleges that the Seventh Day Adventists received reports of the teacher's misconduct as early as December 2014. He is currently serving a 26-year prison sentence. Chris Ingalls, KING 5 Television 06/15/2017
