GM Plaintiffs Add Racketeering Claim to Recall Lawsuits

Plaintiffs suing General Motors Co over a series of safety-related recalls last year have accused it of working with a law firm and claims-management company to conceal an ignition-switch defect linked to 114 deaths. The allegations came in an amended complaint filed late Friday in Manhattan federal court, where more than 200 lawsuits have been consolidated against GM over injuries, deaths and economic losses attributed to the ignition switch and other safety problems that prompted recalls of millions of vehicles.

Toyota Loses Bid for New Trial in Fatal 2006 Crash in St. Paul

In a major defeat for the Toyota Motor Co., U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery ruled Monday that a jury had reached a reasonable conclusion that an accelerator defect was the key factor in a fatal car crash in St. Paul in 2006 and the auto company was not entitled to a new trial. The 67-page decision rejected a slew of Toyota's arguments and affirmed most of the $11 million that the jury awarded the plaintiffs. The judge also added interest that drives the verdict amount past $13 million.

High Court Rules Against Law Firm in Bankruptcy Fee Fight

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that one of the nation's biggest law firms is not entitled to recover $5.2 million in legal fees it incurred in the course of a bankruptcy proceeding. The 6-3 ruling said the firm Baker Botts could not collect additional fees it billed during a side dispute over whether the firm should be paid $117 million in fees earned representing Tucson-based copper-mining giant Asarco in the underlying bankruptcy.

School District to Pay $15M in Sexual Molestation Case

The families of four girls sexually molested by their second-grade teacher settled a lawsuit for $15 million with a California school district on Monday. The settlement in Santa Clara County Superior Court with the Evergreen School District follows the 2012 conviction of school teacher Craig Chandler on charges of committing lewd and lascivious acts on a minor.
