Federal Jury Sides With Austin Police

In 2011, Byron Carter Jr. was a passenger in a car when he was shot four times by a police officer in Austin, Texas. His family subsequently sued officer Nathan Wagner, citing excessive force. This week, after deliberating for over four hours, a Federal jury ruled in favor of Wagner and against damages for the family.

Civil Lawsuit Settled Over Fatal Accident

A civil suit against a Chicago-area teenager who drove her vehicle across several lanes of traffic and struck a family has been settled. The accident caused the death of a 5-year-old girl, and the suit alleged it was the result of the teen "huffing" fumes from a cleaning product while driving. This suit was settled for an undisclosed amount, but a criminal trial against the teen driver is still forthcoming.

JetBlue Settles Pilot Meltdown Lawsuit

Airline JetBlue has settled a lawsuit with passengers on a flight where the pilot had a meltdown. In the suit, passengers claimed the pilot "yelled about terrorism and Sept. 11" during a flight in March 2012. A medical expert said the pilot suffered from a psychotic disorder due to lack of sleep, and the plaintiffs accused the airline of "gross negligence" in allowing the pilot to fly the plane that day.

REI Employee Files Wrongful Termination Lawsuit

A former employee at a REI store in Washington state has filed suit against the retailer after he was wrongly fired. The man, who was paralyzed after an REI-brand bike split into pieces while he was riding it, claims he was forced out of his job after settling a lawsuit against the company over the incident. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Suit: Army Doc Abused by Scout Troop Leader

An Army doctor has filed suit against the Boy Scouts of America, alleging that as a child he was sexually abused by his troop leader. In his lawsuit, the man claims that he was "repeatedly molested" by his scout master in the summer of 1991 and that Boy Scout officials failed to report the abuse to police. After the victim's father reported the abuse, the scout leader was arrested and convicted of sexual abuse.

Lawsuit Filed over Parasailing Accident

A Florida man has filed suit against a parasail company in Pompano Beach after he was wife was killed in a parasailing accident. The woman's harness malfunctioned during a ride and she fell 200 feet to her death. The lawsuit claims the harness was "in bad shape and poorly maintained" and is seeking "substantial" compensatory damages.
