Judge Tosses $14M Jury Award in Online Libel Case |
| A Tarrant County judge has thrown out a jury's nearly $14 million Internet libel verdict. State District Judge Dana Womack sided with the defendants who argued that the jury's verdict was not supported by the evidence. The judgment, signed late last week, does not explain her reasoning. | CVS Caremark Corp and Rite Aid Corp have filed a lawsuit against drug giants Pfizer Inc and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, accusing the companies of conspiring to keep generic versions of a popular antidepressant out of stores. The suit says the two companies have worked together for years to block generic versions of Effexor XR, including "obtaining fraudulent patents and engaging in sham litigation." Doctor Accused of Unapproved Research at State Hospital Quits |
| A doctor accused of performing unauthorized research at a public psychiatric hospital resigned Friday, one day after state officials accused him of making a DVD in which patients were videotaped against their will and identified without permission. On Thursday, the Dept of State Health Services sent Dr. Allen Childs a "notice of possible disciplinary action," alleging that he published research papers about North Texas State Hospital patients without the department's approval and violated privacy rules when he appeared in a video featuring confidential footage of patients receiving cranial electrotherapy stimulation. $25 Million Awarded in Racial Discrimination Suit |
| A federal jury in New York has awarded a local man $25 million in damages in a racial discrimination suit he filed against his employer. The plaintiff, who works at a steel plant in Lackawanna, N.Y., claims plant officials allowed a culture of racism and discrimination at the plant.
