Steven Salzberg: Apple's Next iPhone iOS Might Save Your Life

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving killed at least 3,477 people in 2015 alone. Apple's iOS 11, coming this fall, finally offers a solution. It may not solve the problem entirely, but it will likely save lives. Your phone already knows when it's on a roadway, and it knows that it's moving. So the phone's software'iOS, if it's an Apple phone'can simply disable any apps that might cause distractions. Apple's preview of iOS11 says it will do more than that. It will not only silence all incoming calls, text messages, and other notifications, but it will text people back automatically and tell them that you're driving.

Tobacco Companies File Suit Over Oklahoma's New Cigarette Fee
spacer image
A number of tobacco companies have filed suit in an attempt to block the state of Oklahoma's new cigarette fee. R.J Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Phillip Morris USA filed a brief on Wednesday stating that the state's newly-adopted fee is unconstitutional. If the state Supreme Court rules in favor of the tobacco companies and businesses, it will place a multimillion-dollar hole in the state budget lawmakers adopted last month. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are the tobacco companies, two retailers, a wholesale company and three Oklahoma residents. The cigarette fee, which would add $1.50 fee to each pack sold, is scheduled to take effect in late August.

The mother of the boy took Depakote for bipolar depression during pregnancy and the child was born with spina bifida, the lawsuit against AbbVie alleged. Jurors in federal court in Illinois ruled on Friday after three days of deliberation. The lawsuit was one of about 700 pending cases in the US over Depakote.

Texas High Court Sides With Lloyds In Attys' Fees Discovery

A split Texas Supreme Court sided Friday with National Lloyd's Insurance Co. in holding that a lower court wrongly compelled discovery of its attorneys' fees information in litigation with property owners who claim the insurer underpaid their damage claims, holding the information is privileged. The justices heard oral arguments in February on whether National should be able to keep that fee information under wraps ' a fight that stems from four property insurance cases in which the property owners argued they had been shortchanged on claims.

Texas Justices Give Second Chance In Ambulance Death Suit

The Texas Supreme Court on Friday held that while an expert report submitted in a lawsuit accusing a hospital of causing a pregnant patient's death was insufficient to allow the lawsuit to proceed, the trial court must be given an opportunity to consider granting an extension to amend the report. The Texas Medical Liability Act says a court can grant an extension to cure deficiencies in an expert report, the court said.
