Chrysler Adds 2 Model Years to Jeep Liberty Recall

spacer image

Chrysler has added more than 137,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs to a March safety recall, bringing the total number of vehicles affected to nearly 347,000. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the lower control arms in the rear suspensions of the Libertys can rust and break, possibly causing them to crash. However, the company says it knows of no crashes or injuries from the problem. The recall involves vehicles in states where salt is used to clear ice and snow from the roads.  Associated Press, The Washington Post  06/12/2012

Mother of 19-Year-Old Killed by Border Patrol Sues

The mother of a 19-year-old man fatally shot in the back by a U.S. Border Patrol agent has sued the federal government and the agent himself, claiming it was "an appalling use of excessive force" because her son was unarmed, had his back to the agent and posed no threat.A Border Patrol agent identified by police as Lucas Tidwell shot Carlos La Madrid three times — twice in the back and once in the thigh — as he climbed a ladder on the U.S.-Mexico border fence in southeastern Arizona on March 21, 2011.  AMANDA LEE MYERS, AP, Yahoo News  06/12/2012

BP Loses Bid for White House Emails in Spill Case

spacer image

A federal judge on Monday denied BP Plc access to 21 emails and other documents sent among White House and other U.S. officials related to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, citing the government's need to keep them confidential. U.S. Magistrate Judge Sally Shushan in New Orleans said the federal interest in preserving secrecy, together with the public interest in ensuring an effective response to the next disaster, outweighed BP's need for the documents to defend itself in litigation by the government over the spill.  Jonathan Stempel, Reuters, Yahoo News  06/12/2012

Zavala County Jury Finds for Longview Energy Company

spacer image

A Zavala County jury returned a verdict that legal experts estimate will probably be $162-million or more after a hearing is held to determine the final damages. The case before 365th District Cout basically centered on claims by a small privately-held oil company that a larger energy conglomerate stole leases from them in the Eagle Ford. Through initial production and assessments these leases are predicted to produce some $19-billion in revenues from oil and gas finds. Plaintiff in the case was Longview Energy Company and named defendants included The Huff Energy Fund, L.P., WRH Energy Partners, L.L.C., W.R. Huff Asset Management Com., LLC, William R. “Bill” Huff, Rick D’ Angelo, Ed Dartley, Bryan Bloom, Riley-Huff Energy Group, LLC and Bobby Riley. Longview Energy typically seeks investors for oil deals the company finds and puts together and through their operations attracted the attention of The Huff Energy Fund.  Staff, Eagle Pass Leader  06/12/2012

Accident Totals Renew Debate Over Red-Light Cameras

spacer image

Dallas’ red-light cameras are nabbing even more wayward drivers. But there may be a tradeoff that rekindles debate over the cameras’ safety: Rear-end collisions at the same Dallas intersections have gone up, possibly from so-called panic stops. Curtis Jarecki, a top manager with the Department of Street Services, hailed the program for “eliminating those kinds of crashes where you cringe when you drive by them.” But Gary Biller — president of the National Motorists Association, a drivers rights group — said the cameras remain too unreliable and are used chiefly by cities as “a revenue grab.”  TRISTAN HALLMAN , The Dallas Morning News  06/12/2012

Court: Trial Judges Don’t Have Jurisdiction Over Firing Because of Draft Registration

spacer image

The Supreme Court says federal employees cannot go to trial judges to complain about their firing for not signing up for the U.S. draft. The high court ruled Monday that the Civil Service Reform Act took U.S. district courts’ jurisdiction away from from judging these types of claims. Several men lost their jobs in the executive branch for not signing up for Selective Service between the ages of 18 and 26. They sued, but at least two federal appeals courts ruled that they couldn’t bring lawsuits straight to court because lawmakers had stripped trial judges of their jurisdiction.  Associated Press, The Washington Post  06/12/2012
