Investigators: 12 California Fires Caused by PG&E Equipment

Twelve Northern California fires that killed 18 people and burned through more than 174,000 acres in October were caused by power lines or other equipment owned by PG&E Corp. , according to fire investigators. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection referred eight of the 12 fires to local district attorneys for possible legal action.

Cass County, North Dakota Considers Opioid Lawsuit

Cass County, North Dakota is considering filing a lawsuit against the manufacturers and distributors of opioids. The county would be joining a growing number of counties, cities and states that have filed suit over the opioid crisis. If the county files suit, the case would be separate from a lawsuit filed against Purdue Pharma by North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. In addition to other cases filed against opioid drugmakers, four out of five North Dakota tribal nations have filed lawsuits against the opioid industry.

Complaints/Lawsuits Against Contractors Rise as Residents Try to Rebuild After Hurricane Harvey

There are more than 400 formal complaints and lawsuits that homeowners so far have filed in Houston and other storm-damaged cities against dozens of contractors in the wake of Harvey, and more are being filed each week. The complaints from shoddy work and long delays to accusations of confidence schemes to steal thousands of dollars from homeowners trying to get back into their houses.

Lawsuit: Government Negligent in Texas Church Shooting

The suit, filed in federal court in San Antonio, said that even though gunman Devin Patrick Kelley was criminally convicted while in the Air Force the military failed to enter the information into a database used to conduct background checks of gun buyers. The error, according to the lawsuit, allowed Kelley to buy the assault-style rifle he used during the November shooting in Sutherland Springs that killed more than two dozen people. The Holcombe family suffered about a third of those deaths.

Walgreens to Face Lawsuit Over Customer's Seizure Death

The family of a teenager who died of an epileptic seizure has filed suit against Walgreens alleging the pharmacy's negligence caused the seizure death of the 19-year-old woman. The young woman died of a seizure after the pharmacy would not fill her prescription medication without authorization from her insurance carrier. The Supreme Judicial Court ruled that Walgreens must face the family's lawsuit, reversing a lower court ruling.
