Suit Filed Against NYPD Muslim Surveillance Program |
| A Muslim activist group has filed a lawsuit against the New York City Police Department, claiming department officials have been spying on Muslim-Americans "based only on their religion." According to the lawsuit, the NYPD's practice of "spying and profiling of Muslim-Americans" is an unconstitutional violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments. Suit: LA Fitness Issued Fraudulent Charges |
| An Arizona man has filed a lawsuit against LA Fitness, claiming staffers at a local LA Fitness "used his electronic signature" to fraudulently charge his credit card for over $1,200. The plaintiff said the gym signed him up for multiple personal training sessions without his permission, copying his electronic signature illegally onto a contract. Man Cut Out of Lotto Winnings, Suit Alleges |
| A Chicago Heights man has filed a lawsuit against a group of his co-workers, claiming he was "unfairly cut out" of his share of $118 million the group recently won playing the lottery. In his suit, the plaintiff claims he contributed to a pool in late March, and the group used winnings from those tickets to purchase the ticket that won the May 4th jackpot, but he was denied any portion of the winnings. Suit: Cop Assaulted Disabled Man During Arrest |
| A disabled California man has filed a lawsuit against the Fullerton Police Department and one of its officers who allegedly abused him during an arrest last year. In his suit, the plaintiff says he was "thrown to the ground and stomped on" during the incident and suffered a broken hand. Concussion Suits Against NFL Consolidated |
| More than 80 lawsuits representing approximately 2,000 former NFL players have been consolidated into one master suit accusing the league of hiding information about the risks associated with concussions. According to the suit, the NFL knew for years about the neurological risks associated with football, but only recently implemented policies to help keep players safe. Among those in the suit is the widow of former safety Ray Easterling, who committed suicide in April and suffered from dementia, thought to have been caused by head injuries sustained during his pro career. Records: State Officials Were Told of Electrotherapy Study |
| Newly released documents about a doctor's use of an electrical device on public psychiatric hospital patients have raised more questions about what state officials knew about his research and when they knew it. The Department of State Health Services told the Austin American-Statesman last month that although it was aware that North Texas State Hospital psychiatrist Allen Childs had used cranial electrotherapy stimulation to calm hospitalized patients with profound mental illnesses, officials were unaware he was also conducting research on the outcomes. Three NYC Hospitals To Pay in Malpractice Lawsuit |
| A New York jury has awarded more than $120 million to a local woman in a malpractice lawsuit filed against three New York hospitals. The woman suffered severe brain damage after spending time in three hospitals in February 2004 while seeking treatment for seizures. The suit accused the hospitals of mismanaging the plaintiff's medication and failing to swiftly and accurately respond to her developing condition.
