Suit Outlines 'Inhumane' Conditions at Mississippi Prison

A group of prisoners at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Meridian have filed suit against the jail, claiming they are forced to live in "barbaric and horrific conditions." The suit says rats and mice have overrun the facility; violence is rampant between inmates and cleanliness borders on "grossly inhumane." The suit claims prison officials have been aware of the conditions for some time but refuse to make any changes.

Harassment Suit Against Judge Settled

The city of Aberdeen, Wash., will pay $580,000 to settle a sexual harassment and stalking lawsuit filed by a former employee against a local municipal court judge. In the suit, the former court administrator said the judge made multiple sexual advances toward her, and she was forced to quit her job after she declined. No action has been taken against the judge, whose term expires at the end of the year.

Hep A Outbreak from Berry Mix Prompts Lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed against Costco Corporation and Oregon-based Townsend Farms over a multi-state outbreak of Hepatitis A linked to a frozen berry mix made by Townsend and sold at Costco stores. The suit was filed on behalf of a California woman who was diagnosed with Hepatitis A a few weeks after eating the berry mix. The plaintiff is one of at least 30 victims in the western U.S. to have been affected, the suit states.

Woman Discriminated Against by Military Academy

A Philadelphia woman has filed suit against Valley Forge Military Academy, claiming she was discriminated against by academy officials because of her gender. In the lawsuit, the woman claims that she was treated differently than her male co-workers and "excluded from important meetings and excluded from interviewing individuals for positions that she would eventually oversee." When she complained to HR, she was allegedly told there was nothing to be done. In August 2011, after filing a complaint, she was fired.

Fatal Helicopter Crash in Los Angeles Sparks Lawsuit

A fatal helicopter crash during a reality television shoot has prompted a lawsuit filed by the mother of one of the men killed in the crash. The suit names the show producers, helicopter pilot and companies responsible for leasing the machine as defendants, claiming they "negligently maintained and operated the Bell 206B Jetranger that was used during filming." The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.
