Federal Judge Rejects Lawyers Challenge to State Bar of Texas Fees | | U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel of Austin ruled Friday that compelled membership and financial support for the State Bar does not violate the lawyers rights to free speech or association. The U.S. Supreme Court has previously determined that states are allowed to form bar associations to regulate lawyers and improve the quality of legal services, Yeakel said. The high court also determined that mandatory membership fees can be used to finance activities related those goals even activities that are political in nature, Yeakel said. Michigan State Police Will Face Lawsuits Over Deadly High-Speed Chases | | Michigan State Police will face lawsuits over deadly high-speed chases that took place in the city of Flint. The state Court of Appeals has unanimously decided that the lawsuits can continue against the state police. At the center of the complaints are two high speed police chases that ended in injuries and death in Flint. The lawsuits have been consolidated and are pending in Genesee Circuit Court. 40,600 Deaths Tied to U.S. Nursing Homes | | Over the last three months, more than 40,600 long-term care residents and workers have died of COVID-19 about 40 percent of the nations death toll attributed to the coronavirus, according to an analysis of state data gathered by USA TODAY. That number eclipses a count released Monday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal governments first attempt at a comprehensive tally.
