Wells Fargo Forced Unwanted Auto Insurance on Borrowers
spacer image
More than 800,000 people who took out car loans from Wells Fargo were charged for auto insurance they did not need, and some of them are still paying for it, according to an internal report prepared for the bank's executives. The expense of the unneeded insurance, which covered collision damage, pushed roughly 274,000 Wells Fargo customers into delinquency and resulted in almost 25,000 wrongful vehicle repossessions, according to the 60-page report, which was obtained by The New York Times. Among the Wells Fargo customers hurt by the practice were military service members on active duty.

The family of two Fort Worth brothers who were electrocuted in March by a downed power line are suing Oncor, Texas' largest energy provider. The lawsuit, which seeks up to $40 million in damages, says that Oncor failed to cut the power to the fallen line before the boys were killed and that their deaths could have been prevented.

Mixing Guns and Alcohol Isn't Enough for Liability, Court Rules
spacer image
A Texas court of appeal has ruled that homeowner can't be held liable for an accidental shooting just because a .45 caliber pistol was left on a table where his guests were drinking alcohol. After she was accidentally shot in the ankle during a backyard barbecue, Ruth Hernandez sued the owner of the house where the event was being hosted. But Houston's Fourteenth Court of Appeals concluded in a June 27 decision that the homeowner could not be sued for premises liability. We hold that an objective Texan host, knowing only that guests are drinking and a gun is available for use, is not aware that a serious injury is likely to occur," wrote Justice Brett Busby.

Psychologists Not Liable for CIA Interrogations, Lawyers Say
spacer image
The two psychologists who helped craft the CIA's harsh interrogation methods used in the war on terror should be as free from liability as a worker for a company that supplied the Nazis with poison gas used in concentration camps, defense lawyers said in a motion to dismiss a lawsuit from former detainees. The American Civil Liberties Union challenges that claim, saying the psychologists should be held accountable for the methods they designed following the Sept. 11 terror attacks, including waterboarding and beatings. The sides plan arguments Friday in U.S. District Court in Spokane, Washington.

Chinese Group Hacks a Tesla for the Second Year in a Row
spacer image
For the second time, Chinese security researchers were able to hack a Tesla Model X, turning on the brakes remotely and getting the doors and trunk to open and close while blinking the lights in time to music streamed from the car's radio — an effect they dubbed "the unauthorized Xmas show." The complex hack involved sending malicious software through the car's web browser in a series of circuitous computer exploits. They were able to remotely control the car via both Wi-Fi and a cellular connection.

Honda Says Fatal Car Crash May Be Tied To Takata Air Bag
spacer image
Honda Motor Co. on Thursday said that a recent fatal crash in Florida may be linked to a faulty Takata air bag, potentially making the fatality the second air bag-related death in the state in two months and the 19th worldwide. Honda said that local authorities have not yet announced an official cause of death, but confirmed that — following a joint investigation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — a Takata driver's side air bag ruptured in the crash of a 2002 Honda Accord.
