Drivers as young as 18 years old could be allowed to drive 80,000-pound trucks between states if Congress goes along with a proposal backed by the U.S. trucking industry that safety advocates say would be a disaster. The plan, part of highway legislation that's before the Senate, would greatly increase the number of teenagers behind the wheel of big rigs.

"Workers are not being given adequate protection."

The FedEx shipping company's motion for a new trial in a wrongful death suit that resulted in the New Mexico's largest-ever jury award was rejected here Wednesday by a Santa Fe judge, who also declined to reduce the jury's $165 million judgment. A corporate spokesman for FedEx said later that the company, which was sued over a southern New Mexico crash involving a FedEx truck in which a mother and daughter were killed in 2011, will take the case to the state Court of Appeals.

spacer image
Federal regulators on Sunday levied a record penalty of $105 million against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for failing to complete 23 safety recalls covering more than 11 million vehicles. The civil penalty is the largest ever imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on an automaker for recall violations, surpassing the $70 million fine imposed last year on Honda for faulty airbags. It also represents an escalation of the agencyâ??s efforts to investigate and punish automakers that do not adequately recall and fix defective models.
