Open Burns, Ill Winds
spacer image
The Pentagon's handling of munitions and their waste has poisoned millions of acres, and left Americans to guess at the threat to their health. In the United States, outdoor burning and detonation is still the military's leading method for dealing with munitions and the associated hazardous waste. It has remained so despite a U.S. Senate resolution a quarter of a century ago that ordered the Department of Defense to halt the practice “as soon as possible.” It has continued in the face of a growing consensus among Pentagon officials and scientists that similar burn pits at U.S. bases in Iraq and Afghanistan sickened soldiers. Federal records identify nearly 200 sites that have been or are still being used to open-burn hazardous explosives across the country.

An Austin dentist whose toddler patient died while under anesthesia has filed a lawsuit alleging libel and slander. The city of Chicago has reached a $38.75 million settlement of a lawsuit over its use of red light cameras. The lawsuit alleged that the city failed to give adequate notice to red light camera and speed camera violators. Since 2002, the city's system of 350 cameras has raised $500 million from $100 tickets. Under the settlement, up to 1.2 million people may be eligible for receiving half of the amount paid to the city in red light camera and speed camera tickets.

A bar and a well known hotel on Sixth Street in Austin are both facing a lawsuit accusing them of over serving a woman who hit a cyclist last month. The father of Jo Jo Mckibben is suing The Driskill Hotel, Star Bar and the driver claiming the lawsuit claims the businesses served Katie Bykowski too many drinks when she was clearly intoxicated. Mckibben was rushed into emergency surgery after she was hit last month. She suffered a traumatic brain injury and several fractures and she's still recovering. Happy 100th Birthday! There Goes Your Life Insurance
spacer image
When Gary Lebbin turns 100 years old in September, hanging over any celebration will be one very costly fact: His life insurer aims to cancel two policies totaling $3.2 million in death benefits. It is a standard feature of permanent life insurance, a product combining a tax-deferred savings component with a tax-free death-benefit. The provision calls for the termination of the death benefit and payout of all of the built-up savings when the policy holder reaches the specified age. The limits weren't an issue in the many decades when very few people lived beyond 100. But they increasingly are a problem for the U.S. life-insurance industry as more people become centenarians.

Feds Arrive to Inspect APD Fleet in Carbon Monoxide Case
spacer image
Inspectors for Ford Motor Company and investigators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be on the ground in Austin this week trying to figure out what is causing carbon monoxide to leak into police sport utility vehicles, city officials confirmed to the American-Statesman and KVUE-TV Sunday. The visit will be the second time officials have traveled to Austin since the city in March began reporting that the poisonous gas was leaking into the Ford Police Interceptor utility vehicles, a modified version of Ford Explorers. Austin has become the epicenter of the problem, which also has been reported in other departments nationally.
