Trial Granted for Nurse Fired Over Work Related Injuries

A New Jersey nurse will be able to continue with a lawsuit alleging that she was fired after repeatedly getting injured at work. The New Jersey Supreme Court has upheld an Appellate Division decision demanding a trial in the case. The plaintiff worked for ten years at Saint Claire's Hospital in Denville, where she cared for stroke victims and others requiring substantial aid. The lawsuit alleges that she was terminated from her job after work-related injuries that began in 2007, requiring her to take a total of 12 months of leave from work. A trial date has not been set for the case.

Florida City Files Suit Against Big Pharma

Delray Beach, Florida, is filing a lawsuit against major drug makers over the opioid crisis, which the city alleges has led to a financial and emotional strain on its residents. The first city in Florida to take action against the health crisis, Delray Beach is filing suit against at least eight pharmaceutical makers and distributors, including Purdue Pharma and McKesson Corp. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants "downplayed the addictive nature of opioids and forced the burden of dealing with the resultant overdoses on state, county and city governments." According to city officials, each overdose costs the city $2,000 in manpower and life saving material, and there have been 690 overdoses in the last year alone.

Retailer Stops Sale of Makeup Brand After Asbestos Report

A popular retail chain catering to girls, Justice, says it has stopped selling a cosmetic and is conducting an investigation after a televised report alleged the product contains toxic substances, including asbestos. Reporters at WTVD, an ABC-affiliated station in Durham, N.C., say they sent samples of a highlighter called Just Shine Shimmer Powder to a lab to see if it contained any non-listed ingredients. However, the station said its investigation turned up asbestos and a handful of toxic heavy metals. Exposure to asbestos, once commonly used for building insulation, has been found to lead to certain types of cancers and tumors on internal organs.
