Fiat Chrysler, Parents of Child Killed in Jeep Crash Haggle Over Legal Award

Legal damages awarded to the parents of a boy killed in a fiery rear-end Jeep crash could be reduced by $100 million, lawyers for the family said during a Georgia court hearing on Tuesday. The plaintiffs' lawyers suggested the reduction to a judge hearing arguments from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV for a new trial in the case, in which a jury awarded $150 million of damages for a 4-year-old boy's wrongful death and pain and suffering. Fiat Chrysler asked Judge J. Kevin Chason for a new trial or to slash the damages further to $5 million, arguing legal precedents don't support the $50 million suggested by the plaintiffs, according to a video feed of the proceedings provided by Courtroom View Network.

Uber has reached a tentative settlement in a lawsuit brought by the family of a 6-year-old girl who died in a San Francisco car accident, according to court filings. The girl, Sofia Liu, died after she, her younger brother and their mother were hit by a car in a San Francisco cross-walk on New Year's Eve in 2013. At the time of the crash, the driver was logged on to the Uber X smartphone app and was available to provide rides, the lawsuit said. Liu's family asked the court to keep terms of the settlement with Uber confidential, court filings show, citing the privacy of her brother.

Gay Discrimination Lawsuit Filed Against Wal-Mart
spacer image
Wal-Mart is facing a lawsuit accusing it of discriminating against gay people by not extending health care to the spouses of gay employees. The proposed class action lawsuit was filed by a Wal-Mart employee who alleges her wife was denied coverage by the retailer for years. The lawsuit alleges that the company has violated the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 and a Massachusetts fair-employment law by refusing to offer health care for same-sex couples. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Boston federal court just weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage.
