California Appeals Court Sides With Porter Ranch Gas Leak Victims

An appeals court in California has sided with the victims of a gas leak in Porter Ranch in 2015. Ruling against Southern California Gas Co., the three-judge panel of the 2nd District Court of Appeal remanded the issue to a Los Angeles Superior Court judge for a further hearing to determine "whether petitioners can prove damages from the three-day delay in reporting the leak, as charged in the criminal complaint." According to the lawsuit, Southern California Gas failed to immediately report the leak, which began Oct. 23, 2015, and wasnâ??t capped until mid-February 2016. Misdemeanor charges of discharging air contaminants and of failing to report the release of hazardous materials were dismissed.

The automaker pushed past company lawyersâ?? early safety questions and a veteran development engineerâ??s warning that the cars werenâ??t roadworthy, internal emails and documents show. Ford then declined, after the depth of the problem was obvious, to make an expensive change in the transmission technology.
