Professors' Lawsuit Challenging Texas Open Carry Dismissed
spacer image
A federal judge has tossed out a lawsuit filed by three professors at the University of Texas in Austin seeking to overturn the state's open carry law. The case challenged open carry, which allows people to carry concealed handguns inside most public university buildings. District Judge Lee Yeakel said that the plaintiffs failed to present any "concrete evidence to substantiate their fears" that the open carry law would stifle free speech. The lawsuit alleged that the First Amendment rights of the plaintiffs were violated because the presence of guns in the classroom may make professors less likely to discuss controversial topics.

Parents of Elite Gymnast Sue U.S. Olympic Committee in Sex-Abuse Claim
spacer image
The parents of a former elite gymnast have sued the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics in connection with allegations of years-long sexual abuse by a former team doctor, according to a complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court late last month. The lawsuit was filed under pseudonyms for the gymnast's parents and seeks damages for negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and other civil claims. The parents argue that both USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee bear responsibility because the gymnast was under the care of those organizations at the time of the alleged assaults by physician Larry Nassar, and the parents believe those groups conspired to keep the alleged abuse secret in order to protect their reputations.

Nationwide Stuck With $8M Bad Faith Award, 11th Circ. Says
spacer image
he Eleventh Circuit on Friday refused to let Nationwide off the hook for an $8 million award over the insurer's failure to settle claims against a policyholder who was hit with a massive judgment in litigation regarding a fatal car crash, finding that a lower court didn't err in its pretrial rulings or jury instructions. The case stems from a July 2005 incident in which a Nationwide policyholder, Seung Park, ran a red light while driving drunk and collided with a car driven by Stacey Camacho.
